Randaril is more so like his father than his very outgoing brother. He is quiet and reliable, preferring to watch patiently than be the center of attention. Randaril prefers to keep to himself and is quite patient, rarely jumping to conclusions about situations.
Randaril is a skilled ranger and hunter. His bow skills are rivaled only by Tarvanel (and Elia) and he prefers smaller, shorter blades compared to his brother who is skilled with a typical shortsword. Unlike most rangers (of his world), Randaril can use some magic as well which is not unexpected given both his parents are skilled wielders of magic.
His bow and quiver are his most prized possessions, having crafted them himself while he was in exile.
Randaril was born in the village of Oakdale, which is situated in the Amarasian Vale. His early years were spent in the woods and learning about the way of the natural world from his mother, Rilianna (who never used her second name during this time). When he was sixteen, he returned home from practicing with his new bow to find his mother terrified. He was given a letter and told to run to the city of Astrael and give the letter to the High King. Randaril went to do as he was told but an explosion caused him to run back, finding his home in flames. He saw men riding away, laughing and yelling. Randaril tried to get to his mother but could not get through the fire, and instead ran to the city of Astrael, where he eventually collapsed on the steps to the palace and demanded to see the King. He was refused for several days until he simply tried to walk in and was brought before King Turold and the royal family. He demanded justice for his mother and gave Turold the letter before collapsing into sobs. Turold then read the letter and ordered Randaril to be taken to a room - Amarion Ashfacon was sent with him.
Even before learning that Amarion was actually his half brother, and that Turold was his father, Randaril and Amarion had already started a friendship that would last their entire lives. Randaril was reluctant to accept his new life at first but it was Amarion who encouraged him throughout the years and he eventually accepted the fact that he was a prince and a member of the royal family. Because he and Amarion were only a few years apart in age, they grew very close and both were almost thirty when Tiaryah was born, which is common for elves to have such a high number of years between siblings.
Randaril was with Amarion for all the same lessons but grew to prefer a bow over sword early in their combat training. While Amarion excelled at wielding a blade, Randaril proved to be an expert marksman. Both brothers were very close to their uncle, Tarvanel, who oversaw most of their training in weaponry. Amarion, however, was always much better with people than Randaril and usually talked his way out of a situation while Randaril preferred more direct methods.
When Amarion began to officially court Kistelia, Randaril was at first upset as he had also taken a liking to the feisty princess of Nemarieth. However, he quickly relented when he realized that the two had a connection and were very suited to each other in nearly every aspect. Because of this he quickly resigned his feelings and grew to accept Kistelia as a friend and future sister-in-law (if not a bit of a rival as she was very skilled with a bow). When Amarion went to bring Kistelia to Astrael once the marriage had been approved between both families, Randaril decided to remain at the palace to finish some last minute preparations for the new member of the royal family. As such, he was not present when the caravan was attacked by bandits and his brother mortally wounded (and Kistelia killed, though this was not known until many years later). He was one of the first to note a change in Amarion but thought nothing of the shift in attention that Kistelia gave him. After the wedding, feelings of regret began to settle in his heart - seeds that Kistelia's doppleganger had planted to begin to sow seeds of distrust between the brothers. It worked and over the next few years Randaril's bitterness toward Amarion only grew.
After the birth of Tabenyen, Randaril grew close to Kistelia, eventually beginning to take her to his bed (or visit hers). He began to entertain thoughts of replacing Amarion, taking Kistelia as his wife, and raising Tabenyen himself since Amarion had no interest in his own child. Kistelia, manipulating him the entire time, encouraged this and when the city was attacked, Randaril followed Amarion in hopes to dispose of his brother. Instead, he watched Amarion strike down Kistelia and kill his own child before walking away casually. Fully believing that Amarion was the pinnacle of evil, he tried to follow but was cut off and captured by soldiers ordered to take the royal family alive. Later, when the curse took the city, Randaril hoped Amarion was in it. He was enraged when Amarion was thrown into the same truck as the rest of the Royal Family and almost killed him had the soldiers stopped him from doing so. Even as Turold and Randaril renounced their family ties to him, Amarion only stared blankly, as if already dead.
Starved and desperate, Randaril was just as powerless as everyone else when Krelnar stopped the trucks taking them north. He tried to fight back when the Queen and Princess were murdered - and Amarion just sat there as if in a trance doing nothing or even seeming to care. When Krelnar target him with the death spell next, Ranadril cursed Amarion, hating him above everything else, even the Lich Lord. When Amarion deflected the ray, he was startled but Amarion only gave them orders to leave, standing between what was left of his family and Krelnar. Randaril demanded to fight but Amarion glared at him, telling him this was not a fight even he (Amarion) could win - Randaril had no chance. Turold grabbed Randaril's arm and dragged him back to the trucks and the remaining guards took the survivors away. Randaril saw and heard the necrotic battle that ensued not long after they left, he felt it, too though at the time he was unsure what that depressing weight really was.
The remaining guards were easy to send scurrying off and Turold told his people to loot what they could from the supplies and head into the hills. In the morning, Randaril went with Turold, sneaking back to where they were ambushed to retrieve the bodies of Queen Anahail and Princess Tiaryah. The clearing was devoid of any bodies and Turold was furious, assuming they had been turned into zombies or worse. Randaril picked up the trail of blood leading from the scene of the battle and they followed it to the edge of a cliff where it ended. There was nobody at the bottom and given they did not have time to search for Amarion's remains, either, the two returned to their people and began the long, dangerous exodus back to Shaor.
For the next two-hundred years, Randaril lived a life of exile. His hatred for his brother fueled every choice he made and in many ways he began to believe he never had a brother. Amarion - no matter his fate that day on the cliff - was dead to him. He focused everything into protecting and preserving his people. The elves that stayed with Turold traveled often and Randaril was a ranger well versed in the land. He trained other rangers to scout, hunt, and keep watch. Turold used his magic to keep their hideouts, for they kept moving to avoid being caught by soldiers and bounty hunters, heal and make sure they had food. While Randaril was often busy in his role, he was also bitter because of it. This was not the life his people should have and it always came back to Amarion - everything was Amarion's fault.
When rumors began that Amarion Ashfalcon was destroying entire villages for no reason, the bodies never found or mutilated horribly, Randaril joined some to hunt down his brother, determined to end his brother's evil once and for all. The few times they caught up to Amarion, he felt uneasy by the encounter. For several years, Randaril did not return to his father in fear that he would lead Amarion to their wandering tribe. When he finally had confirmation that Amarion had moved south, he returned to his father and for several decades they kept to the northern parts of Shaor - which was more dangerous due to the Aldralnian army and bounty hunters but safer from being found by Amarion.
When the presence of soldiers and bounty hunters grew too dangerous, they returned to the southern lands and Turold narrowed down their hidden locations to a few seasonal choices that he defended with the help of other druids who were weaker, like clerics, since the fall of Astrael but still capable of simple spells. By this time, Randaril suspected his brother was dead and no longer a threat. Of course, not long after he felt confident in this conclusion that he found a man who looked very much like his brother camped up under a great pine tree, shivering and hungry - in the company of a blue-to-black dragon of all things. The man said his name was Philippe and he was looking for the Elven King because he needed help.
Even though he wanted to, Randaril could not kill this man despite the uncanny resemblance to his brother from their earlier days for Philippe did not act like the Amarion he last remembered. Despite his apprehension, Randaril took Philippe to a clearing, had him guarded, then went to inform his father about this 'imposter'. Turold, however, recognized the real Amarion instantly - he did not tell Randaril as he knew that his youngest son would kill Philippe before they could learn the truth of everything. Determining Philippe's nightmares as the result of a spell gone wrong, which was crumbling destructively, Turold decided to bring Philippe with them to their winter home. It was a choice that Randaril adamantly rejected but lost to when Turold explained his own plans.
During the following days, Randaril tried to get Philippe to 'stop pretending' though he soon came to realize that Philippe clearly had no idea who he was - and Turold wouldn't let Randaril tell him in fear that it could cause a horrible destruction to the spells that were unraveling. Randaril noted the look of sadness on Philippe's face when they passed the vale, the city of Astrael in the distance shroud under the Curse. He explained it to Philippe who looked thoughtful. Randaril hinted at Amarion's involvement and Philippe caught on that Randaril thought he was Amarion. Randaril neither denied or confirmed it in words but Philippe could read people and the price's look told him everything.
During a hunting expedition in which Turold suggested they take Philippe, they were ambushed and while Philippe's swordwork was on par with Amarions, he never used a spell or magic and during the fight claimed he didn't know any. Philippe was struck and Randaril ordered Farroth to get him out of here as the spell was necrotic. Farroth used his harness himself for the first time to return to his normal size, grab Philippe, and bring him back to Winterhome where Turold reversed the spell's draining effect. During this time, K'man and M'len arrived, coming at Farroth's request. Randaril was outside when Philippe woke up, joining him on watch silently. Philippe talked like before but Randaril later realized that the questions Philippe asked about the city were something that only his brother would know. By the time he realized this and told Turold and K'man, Philippe had already entered Astrael. Turold, who knew the evil that was lurking in the city waiting for Amarion's return (as Krelnar had returned about fifty years ago from his banishment), and rushed with K'man and M'len to try to stop Philippe. They arrived too late and while Randaril stood in awe at the living people laughing and crying around him, his father searched the epicenter of the battle, finding Amarion's body cold and lifeless, though clinging to life by a thread.
Randaril went with the Weyr after Turold told K'man and Mlen to bring Philippe back to Pern. He was uncertain of what to do, confused at the tears and fear around him as the people here faced the undeniable fact that Philippe was going to die - because he had lifted the curse of Randaril's city. As the final moments crept closer, Randaril remembered the pendent - the Soulcatcher - that Amarion had given him before he announced he would wed Kistelia. It was an artifact Randaril hated because of who it was from - but had saved him countless times in the past. He tried to bind Amarion's soul to the Soulcatcher to prevent his death but during the spell he felt Amarion's spirit slip away instead. Assuming he had failed, Randaril left the pendent resting on his brother's chest and left the weyr, conflicted in his emotions.
His conflict would continue throughout the coming months as he adjusted to being home. His brother was given a burial with full royal honors at Turold's request and, for the most part, his actions that resulted in the Curse were kept as quiet as possible - not that gossip didn't spread of course. Randaril would later visit his brother's quarters and find the journal entries tucked into the desk, a hiding place Amarion often had hid things in and used magic to retrieve. The words brought sickening guilt to Randaril who realized that in his brother's time of need he had abandoned him - like their entire family. They had believed Kistelia and the nature of who and what she had actually been was also hinted at. Randaril tried to keep the letters hidden from his father but Turold eventually found them and sank into a depression that would lead to him becoming vulnerable to Morpheus' final attack.
When the dragonriders were banished from the city by Turold, Randaril sensed something wrong and tried to discover what it was, risking everything as his brother's letters began to haunt him - whatever had begun back then was not over yet, but this time they had to fight without Amarion, who was perhaps the only one who had a chance against the Lich Lord. Sneaking into Amarion's old room often, despite the sickening feeling now that he knows what happened within it, Randaril tries to find anything he can to help end this, or find someone to help him end it. When he is cornered by soldiers, whom he overhears has orders to kill him, he uses a scroll of plane shift and escapes, visualizing the only place he thinks can help him now - Isla Weyr.
Shaken and scared, Randaril starts begging the confused Weyrleaders for help, telling them that 'he' has father, and the city is in danger of a second Curse - but this time the original one Krelnar had planned and - during his babbling he catches the confused and hopeful look on J'ren's face when he glances behind Randaril. "Who has father?" Amarion tells him, turning Randaril to face him. Amarion is still sickly thin and pale but Randaril recognizes the eyes to be Amarion's. Shocked and stressed out from his narrow escape, Randaril faints. When he wakes up, Philippe is next to him, then makes Randaril explain what is going on first, then explains in simple terms why he's alive again. Randaril gets angry, stating he should have gone back in time earlier but Philppe explains that the past can not be rewritten - only twisted to reveal lies that had always been there. Realizing that Philippe is back to the old Amarion, Randaril simply demands that he take out Morpheus. To do that, however, they need more information which Amarion was never able to find before - that was when Randaril, offhandedly as a quip, asked why they can't just go back in time to get the information they need. While Philippe can't go himself, he asks two friends, Aenon Kahnler and Jarel Redwood, to spend a year of their lives going through time on Sentra to find any and all information about the origin of the Lich Lord and bring it back - if they can. While they wait three days (safe timing it practices, Philippe explains), Randaril recovers but dosn't bring up the letters or anything else -yet.
When Philippe executes his plan, which Randaril agrees with M'len that it is poorly conceived and likely to fail, Randaril does his part as the escaped prince that M'len and Philippe return, posing as bounty hunters. Of course, the part where Morpheus wants Randaril brought to him dead was missed and they soon have to improvise the fight. In the end, Amarion pieces together all the information he had figured out and destroys the sword, Annuren, causing Morpheus to shriek in horror. Randaril is clueless as to how destroying the only weapon that was said to be able to hurt Morphus is actually going to help them win but when they defeat Morpheus after a long fight, Randaril does note that something felt very final about the Lich Lord turning to dust on the spot. After digging Philippe out of the rubble caused by the dragonrider's distraction (landing on the throne room's roof, which was not built to support that many dragons...), Turold, Randaril and his brother are taken to recover while J'ren helps direct the chaos that follows.
While Randaril finds having his brother back strange, but in a good way now, he can't shake the guilt due to the anger he held for Amarion in the past. He also learned that the Amarion Ashfalcon he fought while in exile was actually Tabenyen, who was resurrected by Morpheus while Amarion fought Krelnar that night. Tabenyen attacked Isla Weyr and was later defeated by Amarion. After the Council demands that Amarion give up the crown over some old rule that many find stupid now, Randaril is angry that Amarion abdicated as if it was nothing. Only after he sees his brother with his friends and family on Pern that he realizes why Amarion did what he did.
Randaril attends the Orion Conventions with his father months later and meets Princess Kyla of Aspholanth who is there to represent her country. She also gives Turold the letter from her father, the Emperor, stating that Aspholanth will help with getting Shaor back on its feet after two-hundred years of exile if she weds the Prince. While Randaril is repulsed by the idea of marrying her simply for political gain, he does have a strong pull to the princess. During the convention, Philippe speaks about how Pern selects candidates for dragons after Kyla announces that dragons could be the very thing that stops the Darkness (which only she seems to believe is coming). Kyla and Randaril are Searched by Philippe after the Convention and while Kyla returns to Aslpholanth to prepare to move to Astrael, as Turold will not promise anything yet but will consider the union, Randaril is later taken to Caer TolEras to stand for a clutch. There, he bonds with bronze Meneleth. A month later, he is told Kyla was taken to Caer TolEras as well, bonding a black and would soon be joining them in Astrael. Before she arrives, however, Philippe goes missing while out on the town and Farroth gives Randaril the warning that he cannot hear his rider.
Randaril joins the search for his brother but it is Kyla, a cleric of an active goddess, who is able to scry and find the truth about Amarion's disappearance. By the time she deserves this, Amarion has contacted Farroth and told them to stand by for a major rescue of an unknown number of people. With J'ren's help, they amass several rescue wings composed of riders from TolEras, Arminas Aerie, Isla Weyr, and Treval Dragonry. The women rescued are brought to Astrael. After Philippe collapses while bringing a young man (Ash) to an Aldralnian hospital, Randaril goes to visit him once - mostly to mock him for pushing himself too far like always, but also to make sure his brother is okay. During this time, the two talk about the letters and Amariont tells him that if he had to make the same choices again to protect his family he would. Randaril tells him that he never should have had to make those choices to begin with and hopes that Amarion never has to again. He then leaves when Cynte and Tynena return from a walk to settle the hyper toddler. Seeing Amarion with his family makes Randaril secure that his brother will tell him the next time he needs help, as having a child can change everything.
Over the course of the next few months, Randaril and Kyla...bond. At least, they talk and try to get to know each other but Randaril's two-hundred years in exile is not making the noble life easy for him. Add to the fact that he has a dragon to take care of (though thankfully Alskyrian dragons are less needy than Pernese ones), a council on his case about the plans to get more dragons. He and Kyla then talk about creating a Weyr of their own, which is a good idea but neither can agree on the details - like a name, or location, or how the leadership will work, and everything else. The idea, thus, is scattered across the study of Amarion's old room (now Randaril's room after a major redesign to try to keep the reminders as to what happened to his brother less at the forefront...).
Randaril appears in Skies of Fire.
Randaril is a level 14 ranger with limited spellcaster compared to the normal class (due to rangers being divine magic and the elven gods being gone...)
