Renn is a rider in Astrael, Shaor. His dragon is green Itoshath who hatched at Caer TolEras before Lantir-setia Island was removed from Alskyr to Arcadias. He is currently learning the druidic arts in Astrael and, while being a dragonrider with a very young dragon, Renn is focused more on his personal life and not the coming war or the plans for the Citadel.
Renn took the last name of Meadows after leaving Meadow Brook, his home for the past twelve years and where he had felt more at home until moving to Astrael.
History
Renn was born on a farm and survived the winter when most of the other slaves had not. Before the rise of activists fighting for the rights of humans, half-elves such as himself had little they could do in face of those that only saw the elves as evil monsters from a war long fought and won. While his mother died, Renn was taken in by the daughter of his father - his half-sister, who raised him as best as she could. His father wanted nothing to do with him and eventually Maria took Renn with her when she moved to the city.
Elves later regained a sense of freedom when Renn was about sixteen and was able to attend a school for elves and, more commonly, half-elves, and received an education. He was more interested in animals and biology and it was while touring a zoo that his connection with animals became known. A tiger was ill and sensed Renn's empathy and came to him from across the glass. Renn later told the zoo keeper what was wrong with the tiger and at first he was dismissed. Renn did not know that the keeper did eventually tell the veterinarians what the boy had said, allowing them to save the tiger's life.
Renn's abilities seemed to awaken after the incident with the tiger, and he began to talk to animals regularly, often going to the park. He was seen as odd by many in the neighborhood, and having elven blood made him a target for bullies often. To get even, Renn's animal friends would often pull pranks on the bullies though this did little to lessen the torture he endured from the other children in the area or even his own school.
After graduating, Renn found work at a veterinarian shelter and worked with the animals there. After a year there, he transferred to a rescue shelter where he was able to tell if an animal actually wanted to be adopted by a particular person or family. Eventually, the staff started taking his advice when animals were returned or abandoned after the adoption, as Renn was often never wrong - or rather, the animals were rarely wrong.
Three years later, Renn was forced to leave the rescue center (unbeknownst to him through the efforts of the Crimson Wolves) though he cannot remember why he found himself working in manual labor. He struggled and began to have mental breakdowns often enough that he was sent to another location, only to have the situation repeat. Renn was rescued by members of the coalition of activists trying to give elves more freedom and brought to Meadow Brook to begin healing. Instead of leaving after the program was complete, Renn chose to stay and became the stablemaster, working with the horses and people (more horses, less people).
About six years after taking up residence at Meadow Brook, Renn met Ash - a Republic slave who had been rescued by Amarion Ashfalcon (Philippe), and helped him accumulate to the idea of being free, which was frightening to the young man who had never in his life actually been allowed to make choices for himself or have an opinion. Ash was, compared to many of the elves at Meadow Brook, a challenge for Renn and the staff but made slow progress as he learned that there was far more to life than what he had been subjected to for nearly two-hundred years.
Renn was present when Tarvanel Hawkshield and the NightHawks came to 'rescue' elves, one in particular, but was confronted by Amarion who refused to let anyone go and fought his uncle before allowing himself to be captured. The event left Ash unstable and Renn later found him hiding in the stall of the horse Ash was assigned to for his rehabilitation program. It was the first time Renn had heard Ash's story from Ash and he realized that what they had been told about the young man was underplayed to keep people from fearing or hating him. As Ash opened up over the next few days, more so when Amarion was reported to have returned to Astrael less than a day later and unharmed, Renn allowed himself a bit more of life as well, especially since one of the borders was spending more time in the stable since Ash was her patient. Samantha Perring had always been kind to him but he had dismissed it as politeness until Ash made a comment that prompted Renn to become a bit more bold in his own feelings with the nurse.
After Ash returned to Astrael, Renn and Sam spent more time together and their relationship grew stronger. She wanted to help the elves more and was thinking of taking up the offer she had been given to move to Astrael and help them since, with their gods silent, their clerics could only perform menial healing and not life-saving spells that surgery or other technological advancements could treat. Renn was hesitant but said if she wanted to help Astrael he would let her - he wasn't leaving the Meadows. Two months later she transferred to Astrael and Renn began to second guess his choice.
Philippe arrived months later to propose to Renn to stand for the clutch at Caer TolEras on Alskyr. Renn accepted (after a bit of coaxing) and was taken to Astrael where he stayed with Samanatha in her new home, where she was adapting to the lack of technology and struggling with magic - something Renn quickly helped her with as it came to him far more naturally. Renn then agreed to stay with her in Astrael even if a dragon did not choose him. The next few days living with her were both torture and bliss as Renn struggled with his growing feelings. He managed to distract himself by checking up on Ash, who had definitely made a name for himself since leaving Meadow Brook. He also found that his talent could be expanded and Renn started to visit the Druid's Circle to test what he could actually do.
The day of the hatching, Renn was approached by a green bundle of energy named Itoshath who very loudly told Samantha everything that Renn was not telling him; to which Sam scolded the baby dragon saying that when Renn was ready to be her boyfriend he would tell her. He did - later that night during the celebration held for the new riders, and it was the first time he felt as if he finally had settled his wandering spirit; he ignored Itoshath's 'I told you so' as he fell asleep with Sam snuggled up next to him.
Renn returned to Astrael following the hatching with Samantha and while he had a dragon to care for, he spent much of his time with the druids to learn to better control his innate abilities that had been suppressed for years. Alongside him, Itoshath has begun to pick up a few tricks as well, though, being an Alskyrian dragon, it is unknown just how much the little green will master.
